Anganwadi recruitment in Assam represents the most grassroots level of government employment available to women in the state. ICDS centres — locally known as Anganwadi Kendras — operate in every village and urban ward across Assam's 35 districts, providing supplementary nutrition, pre-school education, immunisation support, and health monitoring for children below six years and pregnant and lactating mothers. Each centre needs an Anganwadi Worker and a Helper, meaning tens of thousands of such posts exist across the state.

The selection process for Anganwadi Worker and Helper posts is intentionally decentralised. Vacancies arise at individual ICDS centre level, and recruitment is managed by the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) for each block-level project area. Selection committees typically include the CDPO, local panchayat representatives, and district-level WCD officials. Supervisor vacancies tend to attract more competition than AWW posts because of the higher pay and supervisory status involved.

These are competitive roles requiring graduates with relevant backgrounds in social work, nutrition, or allied fields. State government initiatives like Mission Shakti and centrally-sponsored schemes under the Ministry of Women and Child Development periodically create additional contractual and programme-staff positions within the WCD ecosystem.
